Will Victoria lead on climate in 2020?

Do you want Victoria to be the national leader on climate action?...

Do you think climate policy should be based on science not political expediency?...

Do you want to show the Morrison government what real climate action looks like?...

There’s just ten weeks to influence the Andrews government's decision on state Emissions Reduction Targets for 2025 and ‘30.

It’s a decision that will set the pace of climate action in Victoria for the next decade and have major implications for energy policy, transport planning, forest protection, and more.

The window of opportunity to influence the decision closing fast so we have to make every day count.

With climate impacts occurring much faster than scientists predicted, the key litmus test for the government is whether the targets help keep global warming below 1.5°C.

Here's what we have in store to demonstrate to strong community support for climate leadership and counter the fossil fuel lobbyists who will be working behind the scenes for loopholes and low ambition.

We’re calling on all community climate champions like you join us on the campaign trail over the next ten weeks so that our call for science-based targets is one that cannot be ignored...

1. HUMAN SIGN: CALL FOR VICTORIAN CLIMATE LEADERSHIP, SUN 16 FEB:

In 2019, we made the case for science-based targets in dozens of meetings with Labor MPs, hundreds of submissions, and other creative actions... Now let’s build on the momentum.

Join us to create a human sign at the Monash University Clayton soccer pitch in the south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne on Sunday 16 February!

RSVP to help us kick off 2020 with a powerful message for climate action that can't be ignored.

With the human sign occurring on the border of the Premier’s own electorate, we need as many people as we can muster to stand in support of science-based targets.

Please email Leigh Ewbank on [email protected] if you can help us promote the event in your community.

2. POSTCARD PETITION DRIVE:

Act on Climate launched a postcard petition drive to make sure Premier Dan Andrews sees the level of community support for climate ambition before making his final decision.

The postcard is designed for you to engage with family, friends, colleagues, and classmates so we can all raise awareness of the upcoming decision and build community support.

If you can help, please drop by Friends of the Earth Melbourne's home at 312 Smith St, Collingwood, to pick up your bundle (and get cracking).

If you can’t make it to Collingwood, please email Anna Langford on [email protected] so we can get a bundle to you ASAP.

3. DONATE TO SUPPORT OUR WORK:

Securing science-based Emissions Reduction Targets for Victoria has been on our agenda since 2017. The upcoming decision is the culmination of years of work.

Will you help us on the home stretch by making a tax-deductible donation to the campaign?

We have poster and flyers to print, newspaper ads to book, a venue and drone operator to cover. (We’ve tapped into our kitty to print postcards and some other expenses).

We have a huge amount of impact on the smell of an empty muesli-bar wrapper. Contributions in coming weeks will take the pressure off and ensure our focus is where it needs to be: on campaigning.

The summer bushfires and the impact they’ve had on communities, fire responders, wildlife, and the natural world remind us what’s at stake.

Let’s make the next ten weeks count and make Victoria the national leader on climate action!

See you on the campaign trail...
