Act on Climate Update - May 2023

Here is the Act on Climate crew's update on what we're up to, what's coming up, and ways you can get involved!

It's an exciting time in the collective right now as we enter a new period of organising. We're switching gears and returning to frontline climate impacts work with communities as well as making time for community care and collective capacity building.

RSVP for an upcoming collective meeting or our Organising Training Series with Friends of the Earth's Sustainable Cities collective if you're keen to be a part of our new campaign or learn some organising skills - no experience required, just passion for climate justice.

This past month has been a period of transition as we wrap up our work on the Safeguard Mechanism and look to the future, while reconnecting with our past...

What does that look like?

  • Building solidarity with frontline communities experiencing climate impacts towards resilience
  • Partnering with the Sustainable Cities collective who are campaigning for better public transport in the West to highlight the intersect of climate impacts those communities will experience disproportionately
  • Facilitating cross collective trainings through a fortnightly series across three months
  • Planning a road trip to climate affected frontline communities

A NEW ERA!

It's an exciting time in the collective right now as we enter a new period of organising. We're switching gears and returning to frontline climate impacts work with communities as well as making time for community care and collective capacity building

Back in 2020 we gathered local knowledge from communities about the climate impacts people are worried about where they live, and the climate solutions they want to see funded and rolled out by state government. The aim of this work was to gather data from the community through surveys and round table discussions to produce The Peoples Climate Strategy.

We are now returning to investigate the climate impacts communities are already experiencing and connecting with locals to hear their stories. We'll be organising a road trip this year to bring people together on a listening tour and hear the stories of locals. Can you tell us what climate impacts you've noticed in your local area?

CLIMATE CARNIVAL

We had a presence and a lot of fun at the two day Climate Carnival, with a stall, forum participation and workshop on offer from AoC.

The Climate Carnival was organised by a collaboration of local climate groups, led by Extinction Rebellion Northside, to introduce the community to a range of local climate and environment groups, talk about the issues we are facing on climate and offer a range of pathways for people to contribute to change making. Thank you to all the organisers and volunteers, including AoC's that made this event a big success!

THANK YOU WILLIAM!

William is about to wrap up a month long internship with us!

We're so grateful for the contributions William made to the team and our work this month. He came on board right at the start of our transition back into climate impacts work and has gathered intel on what's happening in frontline climate communities, what the government plans to do, what they're actually doing and what gaps the community are wanting action on.

William has traveled from the United States to join the Sustainability and Environmental Action study abroad program with SIT.

And remember, you're always welcome to join Act on Climate's weekly meetings. Register here for the details
