About the Better Buses Campaign

Public Transport is for everyone. We are fighting for fast, frequent, and connected services of clean electric buses in Melbourneโ€™s Western Suburbs.

Why Better Buses? And Why Now?

๐Ÿ“ˆ
High Growth ๐Ÿ“ˆ

Melton LGA has the fastest growing population in the entire country, with Wyndham close behind. The City of Wyndham has a population bigger than all of Geelong, or all of Wollongong. Yet these communities have some of the worst Public Transport access in our city

ย โŒ Poor Public Transport ๐ŸŒ

In many areas, buses run only every 40 minutes, even during peak hour. Some suburbs have no train station or are only on v-line. There are no trams at all in the outer West.ย

Newer developments such as Mount Atkinson (Melton) and Mambourin Estate (Werribee) currently have no public transport at all. After years of community organising, the Mount Atkinson Group won themselves a single bus route to be delivered in 2026, but this is far from sufficient.

๐Ÿš• ๐Ÿš— ๐Ÿš™ High Traffic and Car Dependency ๐Ÿš™ ๐Ÿš• ๐Ÿš—

Communities in these areas are completely dependent on cars, driving up their daily cost of living and leaving people isolated if they don't drive.ย

The SNAMUTS composite index (view original image) shows quite plainly how sorely lacking these services are. ย

What do we want?

We are asking the Victorian Government to commit to transformational bus network reform, with a series of frequent, connected, and electric buses to drastically improve quality of life for people in the Outer West.

  • A simple grid of fast and direct bus routes.ย
  • Frequent services (every 10 minutes during the day โ€” compared to an average of 40 minutes right now โ€” and every 10 minutes at night or at the weekend โ€” in contrast to few or no services now).

The time for Better Buses is now!

But We Need You.

This election year, the campaign for Better Buses is more crucial than ever.ย

We need to get our elected officials to commit and act on Better Buses. We can only achieve this by combining our voices together.

The Victorian government has everything they need to implement Better Buses. They have the rigorous social research and modelling. They have the proposal from their own Department of Transport and Planning. They have the economic case.

The one thing they don't have is evidence that voters care about buses.ย

If you live in the Western Suburbs, as far west as Melton and as far north as Tullamarine, please sign the Voter Support Letter and tell your MPs that buses are one of your voting priorities this year.
