This walk is part of the 2nd snow gum summit, which will happen in Jindabyne over the weekend of March 14 and 15, 2026. (Details here).
Guided by Mike Edmondson, alpine tour guide + photographer
Monday 16, 9:30am start
Maximum of 25 people
A walk to Mike Edmondsons favourite Snow Gums in The Ramsheads, using the Dead Horse Gap track access as a 6 + hours walk.
Medium grade with 1.5 hour 4 km mainly uphill section + interpretation .
We’ll begin the walk at the Cascade Trailhead car park, moving first through stands of dead snow gums shaped by the 2003 fires and ongoing dieback. As we climb, the landscape transforms and we emerge into magnificent, living snow gums at the top of the treeline. Here, we’ll complete an additional 2.5 km loop through some of Mike's favourite areas, before descending past a large stand recently impacted by the Snow Gum Dieback beetle.
The walk will finish back at the Cascade Trailhead.
You will need the following:
- Water
- Snacks and lunch
- Sunscreen/ hat
- Enclosed walking shoes
- Adequate clothing (long pants preferable + gaiters because of likelihood of snakes along the track)
- Camera for speccy shots!
Be aware that this is an alpine zone.
The Cascade Trailhead is between the Thredbo ski resort and Dead Horse Gap, on the Alpine Way.
