The snow gum summit will happen at Dinner Plain over February 14 and 15, 2025. We are organising guided half day walks in the area on the Sunday February 16 primarily for forum participants.

You will need to register for these events (we are requesting a payment of $10, because we find that our free guided walks have a large number of ‘no shows’ which makes it difficult to plan for optimal numbers and to ensure we have adequate numbers of leaders).

There will be two walks offered:

• MT LOCH. A 3 – 4 hour walk over moderate terrain in the Mt Hotham area. This will meet at the Loch carpark on the Great Alpine Road at 8.45am for an 9am sharp start, and follow 4WD roads to the summit of Mt Loch. If time allows we will go down to Derrick hut as a side trip. This walk has four moderate and reasonably short climbs in each direction. It is suitable for anyone with a moderate fitness level. We aim to be back at the cars by 1pm.

• MT TABLETOP. This is a 4 – 5 hour walk over steeper terrain. We will meet at the car park at JB Plain at 8.15am for a 8.30am sharp start. This walk crosses snow plains, then has a steep descent to a saddle and long climb up onto the summit plateau of Tabletop. We will aim to have an early lunch on the summit. The walk follows a narrow walking pad. Gaiters and long pants are a must because of risk of snakes. The track can be wet underfoot in some sections and the walk requires the ability to walk uphill for at least 30 minutes. It passes through fire damaged snow gum forests and we will be stopping at a number of points to examine the damage and recovery process. We will aim to be back at the cars at 2pm.

Please note: both these walks will proceed as long as there is no local fire risk on the day.
