The Sustainable Cities collective have been campaigning for bus reform since mid 2021. Our campaign has demonstrated huge support for bus reform and a strong demand from communities in the West for the Victorian state government to stop leaving the West behind. Now we are hearing that the entire bus reform strategy is at risk if they are not adequately funded in the 2023-24 budget!
The West is expanding rapidly and some communities don't have access to public transport. We need to act now to make sure that Victoria's bus reform strategy continues, and to make sure the West gets the buses that they deserve!
Join us to rally at Parliament steps to tell Labor that they can't keep ignoring the West.
What are our asks?
- We know that the Victorian government is slashing funding for public transport projects in this year's budget and we can not let that happen to buses! Buses cost significantly less time and money than major transport projects, so now is the time to invest in better buses!
- The Victorian Government's Bus Reform Plan 2021 was released 2 years ago but since then we have not seen enough action. Will the state government commit to a transformation of the bus network from long, convoluted lines to a simple grid with buses running every 10 minutes before the next state election?
-
Will the government invest in this budget in clean, electric buses and state-owned charging infrastructure to decarbonise our bus network?
- Will the government prioritise Melbourne's Western suburbs, which is the fastest growing area in the country?
- When will the state government invest in accessible transport to ensure the people living with mobility issues, and with disabilities, can safely get around our communities?
- Will the government commit to adequate community consultation for bus reform in every step of the planning and implementation process? and communicate route changes in a way that is understandable to the wider community?
Join us at this rally to keep the bus reform alive and ensure that our vision of a bold transformation to a fast, frequent and connected network of electric buses can go ahead in this term of government!
This action will take place on Wurundjeri country. Sovereignty was never ceded, this always was and always will be Aboriginal land. There can be no true climate justice without First Nations justice.
