Over the weekend, news broke that the Wentworth Group had withdrawn its involvement with the Murray-Darling Basin Authority because of concerns over political interference in the development of a scientifically credible environmental flow regime.
We spoke to The Age about our concerns. The Authority is reported to be developing a Basin Plan that would return only 2,800 gigalitres of environmental flows, less than half of what their own science says is required to restore internationally renowned ecosystems like Barmah-Millewa and the Coorong to health.
This would be a disaster for the river, locking in the death of at least a quarter of our red gumforests and seeing the Murray Mouth close at least one year in every ten.
So over the weekend we worked with GetUp! to put together a petition to Water Minister Tony Burke. We are supporting the Wentworth Group’s call for an independent scientific review of the Basin Plan. Already over 25,000 people have signed on – have you? Please log on and add your name to the petition today– the more voices we have, the greater our impact!
