Join our campaign launch by posting a photo of your favourite snow gum

Screen_Shot_2026-06-18_at_2.29.03_pm.pngFriends of the Earth is preparing a proposal to seek threatened species listing for snow gums under federal environmental laws.

If successful, this will help deliver:

  • ·      Legal protection and regulatory measures
  • ·      Greater access to funding for research and restoration
  • ·      National Coordination
  • ·      Public awareness and profile of snow gums
  • ·      Elaboration of a National Recovery Plan (and Recovery Team)

We believe this is the best chance we have to get the federal government's attention and channel sorely-needed funding to snow gum science and conservation work.

There are many ways you can get involved to support the listing application – and here is our first action. We encourage you to join us.

We want to start to amplify the call for the federal government to respond to this issue and show that community members care.

A starting point is to share a photo of your favourite snow gum (possibly with you in the image), share it on social media, and tag the federal environment minister and us (Friends of the Earth Melbourne).

HOW TO JOIN THE ACTION

1/ Find your favourite photo

2/ Post it on whatever social media platforms you use, with suggested text below. Please modify it how you want and possibly include something about your personal connection to the tree.

3/ Make sure you tag environment minister Murray Watt and share with friends and groups that also love snow gums and want to see them protected.

4/ Include a link for people to sign our open letter calling for the government to support the listing.

5/ Tag us at Friends of the Earth Melbourne, or send us a link to your post, so we can compile them all!

Possible text (please use your own words and perhaps explain your connection to snow gums).

Snow gums are the iconic tree of the Australian High Country - but they are facing ecological collapse due to uncontrolled dieback and more frequent bushfires. Without urgent intervention, we risk losing this keystone species of the mountain ecosystem.

I call on the federal government to support snow gums to be listed as federally threatened. We need the government to create and resource an action plan for the long term survival of this iconic species. I call on @MurrayWattMP to support the listing.

You can tag the Minister via these platforms.
