Response to the Combet Report: Time to Ramp Up Ambition on Climate

Where were we on Thursday 6 June when the advice given to the Andrews government  on emissions cuts was tabled in Parliament? In Inverloch were they’ve lost 40m of beach from rising seas and intensifying storm surges!

The release of the independent panel's advice kicks off the next phase of our push for bold and ambitions Emissions Reduction Targets in Victoria.

We're still digging through the 100-page 'Combet Report' and will have a more to say about it soon. But in a nutshell: We have A LOT or work to do to ensure the Andrews government ramps up its ambition.

The panel recommended cuts of 32-39 percent below 2005 levels in 2025 and 45-60 below 2005 levels in 2030. Yet these targets fall short of what's needed to meet the 1.5°C challenge. You can read our initial response to the media here

With the Federal Coalition refusing to act on climate, we need to see Victoria show greater leadership. And for that to happen we must start taking action today... Here are a few things you can to do to help!

1. JOIN US CAMPAIGN INFO NIGHT ON THURS 27 JUNE:

We're ramping up our campaign but will need some more supporters to step up and join us if we're to get Labor to lift its ambition.

If you live near Melbourne then we'd love you at the Kathleen Syme Library and Community Centre in Carlton on Thursday 27 June for a campaign info night.

Special guest speakers will brief you on the cuts needed to meet the 1.5°C challenge as well as the climate impacts that are already occurring in Victoria. And we'll fill you in on our strategy to ramp up ambition.
Please RSVP here so we can cater for numbers.

2. SIGN OUR OPEN LETTER TO PREMIER DAN ANDREWS:

Communities are already seeing the impacts of climate change. And these frontline communities should be front-of-mind when the Labor government sets targets.

Citizen scientist and Bass Coast resident Aileen Vening has documented 40 metres of coastal erosion from rising sea levels and intensifying storm surges.

We need your help to get Aileen Vening an audience with Premier Dan Andrews to brief him on local climate impacts. We believe the meeting will help the Premier make an informed decision about Victoria's first interim Emissions Reduction Targets.

The Labor government must prioritise communities on the frontline of climate impacts in its decision on emissions cuts. You can sign the open letter here

3. SUPPORT OUR WORK WITH A DONATION:

Our campaign is gathering momentum, but we need help to take it to the next level. With the end of financial year upon us now’s a great time to make a tax-deductible donation to our campaign fighting fund.

Contributions will help us empower communities on the frontline, put the blockers on the back foot, and encourage the Labor government to show leadership. Click here to make a tax-deductible donation.

That's all from us for now. See you on the campaign trail...
