AoC Sept 25 Update: Vic Showing Up to Shape Preparedness

Victorian communities are coming together and showing up to shape the state's climate preparedness!

They have been taking the lead on their adaptation plans, through visioning, learning from and teaching and inspiring each other. And they have been sharing these plans with their MPs and the Vic Gov through the Inquiry into Climate Resilience.

We've been busy delving deep into the Inquiry's Parliamentary Report and are ecstatic seeing how the issues AoC and its supporters and allies raised increased the breadth of the report, ensuring issues such as equality, First Nations- and community-led adaptation, and climate justice were included.

In addition, the solutions required to keep people safe from climate impacts advocated for, with incredible backing by individuals and organisations, shone through as informed, just, well-supported solutions.

We've summarised its 400 pages into 10! Read what the report found were the barriers to Vic's resilience and the ways it can increase it here.

Read Our Summary of the Resilience Inquiry Recommendations

This month, more community members have meet their MPs to pass on our Climate Resilience Inquiry report and talk about local adaptation needs (reply if you're keen to meet yours!).

Our Australian Climate Adaptation Map launch was a resounding success. Be sure to check it out if you haven't already and read our recap of the night here.

We've got more resilience mapping coming up in Nillumbik, as well as our regular monthly Adaptation Activator call. We're trying out a new regular night of the week for these calls - the second Monday of the month from 6pm-7.30pm.

More on all these upcoming AoC events and ways to support us and others in preparing for locked-in climate impacts below!

Keen to join our campaign or learn some organising skills? Come to a collective meeting - no experience needed, just passion for climate justice.

Vast Adaptation Shifts Strongly Suggested

strong call for the state to step up on climate risks - that’s what the Parliamentary Report for the Inquiry into Climate Resilience amounts to. What’s in it? Find a summary of all the findings and recommendations here!

The report firmly backs up our ask for adequate funding and a permanent Victorian Community Climate Adaptation Fund (VCCAF) and other key elements of our campaign, including: ongoing funding, First Nations- and community-led climate adaptation, and just adaptation that considers those most at risk.

Solidarity, Connection & Joy: Australia Climate Adaptation Map Launch

In July, AoC launched the Australia Climate Adaptation Map website! We gathered on Wurundjeri country to celebrate the site launch and showcase climate adaptation initiatives underway in communities across Australia.

The evening, hosted at the Friends of the Earth Co-op Cafe, was a beautiful reflection on the hard work of the collective members in the last few months and the adaptation community in Victoria and beyond.

Read our recap and see photos of the evening here.

Next Adaptation Activator Call: 8 Sept 6pm

Our next Climate Adaptation Activator call is coming up on Mon Sept 8 at 6pm. We'll explore case studies highlighted in the Resilience Inquiry report as practical examples building local resilience

We'll also hear from you how your local climate adaptation projects are progressing, or about any projects you want to start, so that we can support each other as a network.

More MPs Asked to Act on Adaptation

Our Resilience Inquiry report is being handed to state MPs by people worried about climate preparedness. New to the list of MPs met with are Cindy McLeish (pictured), Ellen Sandall, and Sonya Kilkenny.

We're asking MPs to advocate for adequate funding of climate adaptation, as well as for the Resilience Inquiry recommendations to be supported and to outline clear actions in response.

Will you meet with your MP? Reply for more info! Or email them using this pre-filled email.
