Adaptation Alliance Call 2: Engaging Young People

On our 2nd Climate Adaptation Activator call we explored engaging young people and children in climate adaptation. Here's what we got up to and all the info, ideas and solidarity shared on the call, as well as some upcoming events and resources...

Our next call will be on Thurs 5 December 6pm - hope to see you there! RSVP here.

On the call, India presented on engaging young people and children in climate adaptation. Key points shared were:

  • this is important because they have knowledge and skills to offer and they will inherit the consequences of previous generations’ action/inaction
  • young people can help through:
    • Access to different networks
    • important skills that they can share with you (e.g. social media)
    • Refreshing and innovative ideas
  • working with young people:
    • Start with children or young people that are already active in the community (school leaders, community sports, politically active in other areas)
    • Don’t infantilise and assume you know more than them, mutual respect is key
    • Relate to them on a personal level
  • examples of how to work together:
    • Co-designing an event or program with young people involved in the organising
    • Working with your local schools to see if students can help you implement adaptation initiatives as part of extracurricular activities/volunteering hours
    • Mutual skill shares between different generations e.g. how to use a radio, compass and navigate a map, how to use technology to keep up to date with information in a disaster, how to use social media to reach different audiences

We then heard from Lili, a young person involved in climate activism, who shared the barriers to young people getting involved. Read her thoughts in the minutes!

EGCAN "Why Care? Why Prepare?" public forum

East Gippsland Climate Action Network's Climate Ready Communities project is hosting a public forum providing information from local agencies and organisations on being prepared for weather related impacts.

Preparedness & Recovery Grants

Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR) provides disaster preparedness and recovery grants for remote, rural and regional Australia. It aligns funding, big and small, to community-led solutions that build resilience and long-term viability and vitality.

Previously funded projects also provide good examples of building community connection and education around adaptation and are worth checking out.

Hope to see you on the next call!

Together we can help prepare communities for now unavoidable climate impacts!
