Adaptation Alliance Call 1: Activator Opportunities For Support

On our first Climate Adaptation Activator call we delved into what being an activator could look like and what subsequent calls could focus on! Here's what we got up to and all the info, ideas and solidarity shared on the call, as well as an upcoming heat safety event and some resources...

Our next call will be on Thurs 7 November 6pm - hope to see you there! RSVP here.

We started crafting a group agreement of how you want to engage in this space and how you can be made comfortable to contribute. This can/will be added to at subsequent meetings.

On the call, the history of the FCAV calls was shared as well as...

  • our ideas of how we could support you to start or continue the conversation around adaptation in your community:
    • help you host events e.g. forums sharing local impacts
    • help you facilitate activities e.g. visioning, asset mapping, games
    • doing skill shares e.g. facilitation, trauma-informed responses
    • doing research - finding info and reaching allies
    • guide you through starting an adaptation initiative in your area

We then heard your thoughts...

  • people were worried about:
    • the lack of interest in adaptation projects from community
    • a low understanding of adaptation and a lack of action being taken
    • people being overwhelmed by adaptation
  • people were wanting:
    • to know how to get people to events and interested in adaptation projects
    • to learn from case studies and their lessons
    • more education and events around adaptation
    • to ensure educational resources are available in different languages
    • to find people and orgs to support them
  • people are taking action by:
    • finding out more about what is happening in their area
    • talking to their council about their adaptation plans
    • contacting each other about the events they have planned
    • hosting resilience forums and adaptation games
    • look at the adaptation initiatives mindmap for ideas

Next Call in Nov

On the second call, we plan to do a presentation on involving young people in disaster preparation and planning.

We will then facilitate a brainstorm of the local stakeholders, initiatives, and groups you can connect with to find out what has or is already being done locally around adaptation.

This brainstorm can also be used to consider who in your community could help you get an adaptation initiative going and how you could build interest.

We will also make space to hear from you - please bring along any questions or challenges the hive mind on the call might be able to help you with.

City of Melbourne Heat Lab Evaluation Report

Young People & Disaster Preparation

13 October is the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction. This year's theme is: empowering the next generation for a resilient future.

By actively involving young people in preparation and planning, asking for their advice and ideas and listening to their concerns, they will feel empowered as active members of their communities.

Read how to make community disaster preparation and planning more inclusive for young people, check out the Young People and Disasters Resource Hub and the Youth Affairs Council Victoria's Trauma Informed Language Use Guide for Disaster Risk Response Recovery and Resilience.

We'll discuss this more on our next call before brainstorming who else we might connect with in our communities.

Together we can help prepare communities for now unavoidable climate impacts!
