Solidarity with Camp Sovereignty.

1.pngOn the 31st August at approximately 5 pm, a group of males wearing masks and identifying as neo Nazi’s attacked Camp Sovereignty with the intention of causing harm to the people who gather at the space, which is a place of ongoing indigenous resistance, a place to pay respects, meet mob and share stories.

Seven men involved in the attack have been arrested by police so far (as at September 5) - details here.

Senator Lidia Thorpe has called for the neo-Nazi protesters to be investigated for hate crimes.

This is an important moment that calls for all allies to step up and show active solidarity.

FoE statement of solidarity

On the 31st August, following the anti-immigration 'March for Australia,' a group of males identifying as neo Nazi’s attacked Camp Sovereignty in a racially motivated attack, with the intention of causing harm to the people who gather at the space. Those who staunchly stood their ground, whilst baring the brunt of violence were First Nations folks, women, non-binary people and people of colour.

Camp sovereignty is an important place of ongoing Indigenous resistance, a sacred burial ground, a place to pay respects, to meet mob and to share stories.

As an organisation actively opposed to colonialism, white supremacy, and patriarchy; and committed to climate justice and solidarity, we at Friends of the Earth Melbourne unequivocally condemn the actions of this white supremacist group of thugs. Their racism and violence is unacceptable. We stand in solidarity with those impacted by their violence both on the day, and the wider community who have been impacted by these events in the aftermath.

We wish to extend our respect and gratitude to all of the people who have showed up to protect camp, and stand up against racism and fascism in Naarm, in particular to the staunch First Nations organisers whose leadership and knowledge we must continue to abide by and respect.

So far, seven men involved in the attack have been arrested by police (as at September 5) - details here, and Senator Lidia Thorpe has called for the neo-Nazi protesters to be investigated for hate crimes.

This is an important moment that calls for all accomplices and allies to step up and show active solidarity.

We implore all of Friends of the Earth Melbourne members and supporters to stand up for First Nations justice now and always.
