SKAT is the Strzelecki Koala Collective at Friends of the Earth Melbourne. At our last meeting (May 13, 2026) the collective unanimously agreed to oppose the Fish Creek Quarry expansion that has been concerning concern in the South Gippsland region. SKAT supports the work of Prom Coast Guardians and their tireless work to stop the quarry expansion on the Hoddle Range.
This is the third quarry issue that SKAT has been concerned about since 2021. Both the other quarry proposals at nearby Lavers Hill in 2021 and Carrajung in 2024 were stopped.

Injured koala from road strike on the Meeniyan-Promontory Road. What traffic issues will the new quarry cause?
We believe that the farmland proposed to be swallowed up by this Quarry is an essential “highway” for the native wildlife to and from the Hoddle Range.
SKAT also concurs with the Prom Coast Guardians that the quarry will be a tourism eyesore, will impact on local residents including noise issues, could impact on local businesses including vineyards, could cause health problems associated with breathing in crystalline silica from quarry dust, impact on local flora and fauna and cause irreversible environmental damage.
Of note, the new proposed quarry butts up against The Hoddle Range Flora Conservation Reserve which is of great concern to SKAT. Residents in the area including people living on Samman Road have been growing trees and protecting forests to sustain the Strzelecki Koala’s. This new proposed quarry will take out old remnant tree lines that they use to traverse the farmland from the Reserve to other forested areas.

The old quarry is approximately 12 hectares and the new quarry is approximately 50 hectares. The existing quarry supposedly supplies local farms with materials for farm roads and tracks. The new proposed quarry is much larger potentially meaning that the proposed quarry will provide quarry materials for more businesses than just local farms. Where will the newly quarried materials end up?
