Offshore Wind: Shoot the Breeze with your MP

2025 is a crucial year to advance the rollout of offshore wind in Australia… and we need community power to ensure it happens on time!

Join Friends of the Earth’s Yes 2 Renewables campaign, Victorian Trades Hall Council, and Star of the South offshore wind project for a webinar where you will:

  • Get a status update on the progression of offshore wind
  • Hear about why community mobilisation is vital over the next two months
  • Get the tips and resources you need to organise a meeting with your local federal member of parliament

Why now?

Victoria is the state most advanced in its planning for the construction and operation of offshore wind. The speed and success with which offshore wind begins operating in Victoria is seen by industry and energy experts as key to rolling it out across the rest of the country.

Victoria is the only Australian jurisdiction to have set offshore wind targets, and the leading project, the Star of the South offshore wind farm in Gippsland, is ready to press go after seven years of feasibility studies and development.

The Victorian government now needs to hold an auction through which Star of the South and other companies will secure contracts for the projects that they can then progress to construction. However, Victoria needs the financial support of the federal government to hold the auction and guarantee the projects’ future financial stability.

There is a narrowing window of opportunity for the auction to be held before the end of 2025. If the auction is delayed, it will most likely not occur until after the 2026 Victorian state election. This would blow out the timelines for the first offshore wind projects to come online. It could delay the closure of ageing coal fired power stations, and mean we don’t achieve our state and national emissions reduction and renewable energy targets.

Industry, unions, and communities in Gippsland are eager and ready to make offshore wind a reality. All that’s needed is for the Albanese government to provide the necessary funding.

If federal government MPs hear from their constituents about the importance of not delaying the rollout of offshore wind any longer, it will make a big difference.

Will you come along and learn about how you can organise a meeting with your federal MP to tip the balance?

We hope to see you there!
