ExxonMobil (Esso) plan to partially remove their old gas rigs and dismantle them near a RAMSAR listed wetland facing Wilson's prom on the South Gippsland coastline. Asbestos, radioactive materials and hydrocarbon sludge would all be dragged onshore before being carted on the ailing, single land South Gippsland Hwy to various locations for recycling and waste disposal around Victoria. Everything below 55m below sea level would be left where it is to corrode, releasing a toxic legacy for marine life.
So far consultations undertaken by ExxonMobil have not met with community satisfaction. They have been poorly advertised. They have provided limited information. They have failed to address Federal regulations or international best practice for rig decommissioning.
The environment and people of South Gippsland deserve better.
We are launching a petition calling on the Victorian Government to open a public environmental effects statement consultation for the gas rigs being pulled out of the oceans off the Gippsland coastline. We believe that the community has the right to scrutinise this project and have their concerns be heard and addressed. Join us for a rally on the Parliament House steps to stand with the local community to demand more public input to the full implications of this dirty and damaging project.
