Polluters should pay for, not profit from, disasters.
Public money should be helping communities prepare for disasters. Not funding the very polluters that are fueling the climate crisis.
Will you call on the Federal government to end the hypocrisy and divest the Disaster Ready Fund from fossil fuels and weapons?
So-called Australia’s Sovereign Wealth Fund, created for our collective future, is heavily invested in fossil fuels, mining, military and weapons manufacturing. Dividends and the higher-than-average return on investment at 15% in the last 12 months are therefore directly tied to profits from these companies.
The government is gaslighting us into believing that they are taking meaningful action towards reducing emissions and preparing us for the disasters we are already witnessing, while discreetly investing in the very companies that are causing the climate crisis.
The Disaster Ready Fund exists because the Government acknowledges climate change will make disasters more frequent and severe. Yet the portfolio funding that adaptation continues to profit from fossil fuel expansion, military escalation and industries driving instability. The Government is paying to prepare communities for a future that its own investment strategy continues to finance.
Within the DRF, over $28 million is invested in fossil fuel companies and $10 million in arms manufacturers.
The portfolio includes:
-
$7 million invested in Woodside - a major gas company
-
$1.6 million in APA Group - a company responsible for gas pipelines, including the proposed NEA pipeline enabling further fracking in the NT
-
$350,000 in Alcoa - a company responsible for strip mining and selling to weapons manufacturing
-
$8.4 million in Rio Tinto who instigated a civil war in PNG that lasted for 10 years, and blew up the Jukan Gorge
-
$40.5 million BHP
-
$5.5 million in ExxonMobil
-
$3.1 million in Santos
Across the entire Sovereign Wealth Fund, over $700 million is invested in Woodside, $300 million in Santos, $3 billion in BHP, $3.5 billion in ANZ, which is directly tied to funding fossil fuel projects, and $8 billion in BlackRock, which invests in fossil fuels and weapons.
Not only did total investment in Woodside increase from $5.5 million to $7 million, but the number of shares bought also increased by 18,000 - meaning the Future Fund actively bought MORE shares in 2026.
If the Future Fund is a publicly owned fund, the public should have more of a say over what the companies are that it is invested into.
It must reflect the imperative of protecting our future. Current returns on fossil fuel companies should not be sufficient justification for maintaining investments in companies that will face transition risk, environmental liabilities and public backlash.
It is hypocritical and financially irresponsible.
Divestment is the only way to stop this blatant contradiction and profiting. To move funding away and disrupt the company’s social license.
We demand increased spending on adaptation, resilience and risk reduction from polluters' profits, and that polluters are divested from within the DRF.
Divest from destruction. Invest in resilience.
Add your name to this petition if you believe that this hypocrisy should be called out, and that the government must divest from these environmentally destructive industries.
This campaign is also in support of other campaigns that are targeting divestment of the Future Fund. This includes the Redline Package and the APAN campaign, which both demand the government divest from weapons and illegal settlements.
