Act on Climate update: We flattened the COVID-19 curve, now for emissions!

It has been a marathon for Victoria but we did it. We bent the COVID-19 curve down to zero. And now it's time to bend the emissions curve in the same direction.

Here’s a quick update on our efforts over the last month and upcoming actions...

BREAKING - DAY OF ACTION FOR VICTORIA'S CLIMATE TARGETS, SUN 29 NOV:

The Andrews government will soon set Emissions Reduction Targets for 2025 and '30. And we have an opportunity to influence the final decision.

Join us for a Day of Action for Victoria's Climate Targets on Sunday 29 November.

Victorian Minister for Climate Change Lily D'Ambrosio has stated publicly that the final decision will be made by the end of the year.

If that's the case then we have only weeks to influence the outcome. It's why we need your help to send a strong, positive message to the government about the targets we want to see for Victoria.

We'll be in touch soon with specific details about the actions we'll take on the day. Rest assured, the action is COVID-19 safe, designed for mass participation, and to have impact. CLICK HERE to sign up and receive more info.

Please help us build momentum for the day by encouraging family, friends, neighbours, and colleagues to join you and by sharing the following Facebook and Twitter posts.

ACT ON CLIMATE TO RIDE '100 LAPS FOR CLIMATE LEADERSHIP':

Act on Climate will set the scene for the upcoming Day of Action by cycling 100 laps of State Parliament House on Thursday 19 November. The creative action will demonstrate the community's commitment to Victorian climate leadership.

The relay team will notch up over 100km of distance while towing a bike-trailer billboard bearing a message calling for leadership from the Parliament. The endurance feat will also raise much-needed funds for our grassroots campaign.

OPEN LETTER PUTS SCOMO IN THE HOT SEAT - NOW TO GET A RESPONSE:

In just a few weeks, over 2,000 people from across the country and organisations such as the Bushfire Survivors for Climate Action signed our open letter to Prime Minister Scott Morrison. The letter outlined immediate steps the Federal government can take to increase ambition on climate and jobs.

Last week, Australian Labor Party Member for Bruce, Julian Hill, delivered the letter to the Prime Minister’s office and recorded a message before the drop off.

Now we need your help to ensure we get a timely and considered response from the Prime Minister's office.

Please email Prime Minister Scott Morrison (and his Victorian Labor counterpart Premier Dan Andrews) to stir-up some conversations, help get the letter on the radar, and generate a response.

LAST CHANCE TO HAVE YOUR SAY ON CLIMATE SOLUTIONS SURVEY:

Since June this year, Act on Climate have been developing a People’s Climate Strategy for Victoria.

The People's Strategy will be presented to the Andrews government in February 2021 to inform the government’s own first Climate Change Strategy.

Today, we are kicking off a final push to gather as many responses as we can for our climate impacts and solutions survey, before we close it on November 15. Can you help us?

CLICK HERE to take the Climate Solutions survey.

And once you've done that… Post the link on social media to encourage friends, family, and work mates to complete it too. Send a personalised email or text to some friends asking if they’ll complete it.

WIN FOR OUR CLIMATE - VICTORIA TO BUILD AUSTRALIA'S BIGGEST BATTERY:

The Andrews government announced that Victoria will build Australia's biggest battery. The announcement comes as the Andrews government makes its final decision on the state’s first interim Emissions Reduction Targets:

"Victoria has positioned itself as the national leader on energy storage. Our state can be the national leader on climate by setting science-based Emissions Reduction Targets," I said in our statement to the media.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

There are plenty of informative online events coming up in November. We'd love to see you at the following:

And remember, you're always welcome to join us for our weekly Act on Climate meetings which we're now holding online via Zoom (Mondays at 6pm).

That's all from us for now. See you on the campaign trail...
