April 1 #NuclearFoolsDay Digital protest action

Only fools would choose nuclear power.

April 1st is Nuclear Fools Day.  Let's flood the internet with colourful messages for the day. #NuclearFoolsDay

Australia has a surplus of sun and wind to power the country; energy suppliers and industry are already moving to renewables. Waiting another two decades for nuclear will be a license to continue burning fossil fuels – nothing more.

On April 1 thousands of people across the country will brighten up social media and Aussie streets to mark Nuclear Fools Day. Messages drawing attention to the risks of radiation and demanding an end to the nuclear distraction are a timely reminder now when we need real climate solutions, not political pipedreams.

Everyone can take part in just two easy steps! Step one: set up your silly & colourful protest (photo/video) Step two: post it to social media on Tuesday April 1st.

How to get involved

Step one: set up your digial protest

Gather colourful dress-up's, silly photos, clothes, face paint or other silly & colourful things you have in or around the house to craft a message or image. You want to make sure that the message you're sending out is clear!

Ideally, your message should be about the dangers and delay of nuclear and that legitimate climate solutions are here now. But get creative! If you get stuck, use the following slogans and hashtags:

  • Nuclear Fools
  • Only Fools would choose nuclear
  • Climate action, not distraction
  • #NuclearFoolsDay (this is the hashtag we’ll use in our social media posts on Nuclear Fools Day  on 1 April)

Once you’ve taken your photos, pop your colourful protest somewhere visible for others in the community to see. A front-facing window, balcony or verandah are great options. You never know, you might inspire someone else to make their own colourful protest! At the very least, you’ll make them take notice!

Step two: post your protest photo or video to social media

On Tuesday 1 April, people across the country will post their colourful protests to social media, creating a storm of online activity and hopefully getting our message trending on social media sites.

For maximum impact it’s important we all post at the same time, so make sure you hold fire until Tuesday 1 April!

In your social media post, make sure you include:

  • Your best colourful protest photo
  • A message about why you want real climate action, not a radioactive distraction
  • The hashtag #NuclearFoolsDay

Our big goal for the day is to get our hashtag #NuclearFoolsDay trending on all social media platforms. If enough people use a hashtag or talk about a specific topic at the same time, it can start trending, so millions of people will see it.
