On the April 26, the 39th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear accident, we are organising a one-day Nuclear-free Bike Ride from from Camp Sovereignty in the city via Brighton to Kooyong. Please note that the 3-day ride from Naarm to Loy Yang has been cancelled on request of the community there.
You can join us at any point along the way, join us for a part or the whole ride. The total ride will involve 3 hours or slow (10km/ hour) riding. The schedule for the ride:
10:00 am Gather at Camp Sovereignty (formally known as Kings domain near Sydney Meyer Music Bowl) for a send of
10:30 am Start ride to Brighton
12:00 pm Arrive in Brighton Esplanade, eat your brought lunch or buy some there. There will be some leafleting, stenciling and any other friendly actions people come up with.
1:30 pm Start riding to Kooyong
2.30-3 pm Arrive in Kooyong & have a snack
3:00 pm - 4 pm Chernobyl Vigil
At the lunch break in Brighton we will have the chance to engage with the public, and arrive in Kooyong later in the afternoon to a small vigil commemorating the Chernobyl nuclear disaster and the implications of a nuclear power industry in Australia. From Kooyong people can cycle home or take their bike on the train. Train stations we will pass along the way are North Brighton, Garendvale, Toorak and Kooyong.
There will be a prop/banner making session for the bike-ride on Thursday April 24 from 6-8pm at Catalyst social centre, 146 Sydney Rd in Coburg.
