Friends of the Earth launch People's Climate Strategy for Victoria: Now for action!

Friends of the Earth Melbourne's Act on Climate collective officially launched its push to write a People's Climate Strategy for Victoria with over one thousand people watching the online launch via Zoom and Facebook live. The strong level of interest is a vote of confidence in the idea.

Writing a People's Climate Strategy for Victoria to present to the Andrews government later this year is a bold and ambitious undertaking. But shaping the state's first climate strategy is an opportunity that can't be missed.

The Victorian government is required to prepare and rollout a climate strategy every five years out to 2050. Our efforts in coming months will influence the Labor government's own plan (which must be prepared by October 31) as well as all those that follow it.

Friends of the Earth and the Act on Climate collective cant do it alone...

The collective needs your help to ensure the strategy is robust, capable of getting us to zero emissions as-soon-as-possible, and leaves no Victorian behind.

Here are the immediate next steps...

1. REGISTER YOUR INTEREST TO JOIN A WORKING GROUP:

Act on Climate will convene working groups for each region of the state (including metropolitan Melbourne). These working groups will take the lead with community engagement, brainstorming, developing local case studies, and more.

Please CLICK HERE to take a short online survey to register your interest.

The collective is looking for people from all walks of life to participate: first nations people, unionists, farmers, school students, and more, so please forward the survey to people who you think would like to get involved.

(Share our Facebook and Twitter posts to boost the recruitment drive!)

2. ATTEND THE UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE'S EVENT ON VICTORIA'S EMISSIONS REDUCTION TARGETS:

Friends of the Earth commissioned the University of Melbourne's Climate & Energy College to investigate how Victoria can cut emissions and achieve Emissions Reduction Targets that are inline with the goal of keeping global warming below 1.5°C.

The analysis also includes an estimate of the job opportunities, costs, and economic benefits to the state. The modelling will set the scene for the community-driven research that we will undertake for the People's Climate Strategy

The University of Melbourne will premier its findings in an online event on Wednesday 10 June. CLICK HERE to RSVP for the event

3. SUPPORT OUR WORK WITH A DONATION:

Act on Climate have a huge impact despite running on the smell of an empty muesli-bar wrapper. Over the last year we have built huge momentum for the Andrews government to set science-based Emission Reduction Targets. We're poised to do it again for the state's first Climate Change Strategy with the People's Climate Strategy

Please CLICK HERE to make a tax-deductible donation and help keep the collective on the campaign trail.
