AoC Dec 25 Update: Celebrating Wins & Keeping Each Other Safe this Summer

What a year progressing climate adaptation in Victoria!

Celebrate with us while helping us continue this work by attending our gig fundraiser this Friday! Come along to hear more about our work this year and what we have planned for next year.

In the past month alone we have facilitated 8 MP meetings, had our campaign mentioned in Parliament, joined a FoEM contingent at Rising Tide, and helped launch Renew Australia for All's Climate Safety Plan.

This brings the total so far to 16 MPs met with. There's still time to meet yours or quickly fire off our email asking for adequate adaptation funding in the next budget.

Zooming out, together, this year we:

  • heavily influenced the Inquiry into Climate Resilience, with the need for more funding demonstrated and a VCCAF mentioned as a key funding mechanism,
  • circulated our Climate Resilience Inquiry report to promote the findings and adaptation solutions,
  • had impactful community resilience mapping sessions,
  • launched our Australian Climate Adaptation Map,
  • held monthly Adaptation Activator calls connecting people across Vic (an update on these is below!), and
  • hosted an incredibly inspiring Climate Adaptation Fair showcasing solutions and creating lasting connections (another is planned for next year, but likely only in the second half of the year - watch this space!).

This summer could be a volatile summer, with BOM confirming a La Nina and warning of hotter, drier months ahead, and fire authorities saying parts of the country are primed for fast-moving bushfires.

Help keep others in your community safe by connecting with those also concerned and pinpointing some actions to take locally to ensure everyone, especially those most at risk, is informed and as prepared as possible.

Read how you can you keep yourself and those most at risk in your community safe in heatwaves here. Find excellent resources on bushfire preparedness here.

More on all of this and ways to support us and others in preparing for locked-in climate impacts below! Keen to join our campaign or learn some organising skills? Come to a collective meeting next year - no experience needed, just passion for climate justice.

New Vic Climate Change Strategy: Right course but clear funded plans required

Vic's Climate Change Strategy 2026-30 was released in November. The Strategy has good plans in place to improve climate preparedness, but it is lacking in certain aspects and has seemingly stepped back on "transformational adaptation".

The adaptation plans needs to be backed up with adequate and ongoing funding and improved transparency, public communication, and consultation.

We need concrete, clearly laid out Adaptation Action Plans (due in 2026) that implement the Climate Resilience Inquiry recommendations and ensure the immediate and extensive adaptation solutions needed to prepare Victorian communities and keep everyone safe as we adapt to a changing climate.

Read our on full response to the release of the Strategy here.

Adaptation Activator Calls Update

Climate impacts are here – and it's becoming increasingly important to organise within our local contexts to keep our communities safe.

Our Adaptation Activator meetings are changing shape to become skill-sharing meetings for community members who are currently actively organising around climate adaptation in their local area.

If you want to get active and run a collective process like Community Resilience Mapping in your area, we are keen to help facilitate these events alongside community members in 2026. Please reply to this email to express your interest!

Even More MPs Asked to Act on Adaptation

Community members and local orgs are continuing to meet with their state MPs to ask them to back more funding of climate adaptation! Thank you to those who took the time to meet with their MPS and to these MPs for taking the time to listen to their constituents' concerns for taking these concerns to Parliament.

In October and November:
🤝 Greater Dandenong Environment Group met with Gabby Williams and Tim Richardson,
🤝 Climate Action Maribyrnong and others met with Katie Hall and Ryan Batchelor,
🤝 Whittlesea Climate Action Network met with Lauren Kathage,

🤝 a community member met with Jess Wilson's advisor,
🤝 DCAN met with Kat Theophanous and Nathan Lambert, and
🤝 Latrobe Valley Sustainability and representatives from Baw Baw Sustainability Network, Voices of the Valley and Wellington Climate Action Network met with Harriet Shing.
