Brumby’s dirty plans for Victorian climate

The revelation that the Brumby Government is pushing ahead with plans to export the massive stores of brown coal that Victoria has underground has shown how serious the ALP really is on dealing with climate change.

Louise Morris, Friends of the Earth Coal and Climate Campaigner said, “the leaking of these documents is yet another example of what the state Governments real position is on tackling climate change. Rather than supporting renewable energy projects such as Solar Systems, the Brumby Government is not only planning on building more coal fired power stations – it is now looking to develop an export market, with Exogen, for the dirtiest coal there is.”

“To export brown coal, the dirtiest of the coals, to other countries is akin to dealing the dirtiest drugs on the streets of other countries, and claiming we are not responsible for the deaths it causes – as someone else would have done it if we didn't.”

“These leaked documents have interesting correlations with proposals for the HRL Ltd IDGCC coal fired power station in the Latrobe Valley, the site of which is yet to be declared,”said Ms Morris.

“The Brumby Government is setting our state up to be a loser in climate change. They continue to hitch our wagon to the most polluting coal, in the face of growing protests from community to switch our reliance from coal to renewable energy sources. Now we are proposing to push our dirty coal on other countries.”

“We need strong emission reduction targets, a dramatic expansion in renewable energy, a moratorium on new coal developments, and a government that is up to task of providing visionary leadership that benefits all of us” concluded Ms Morris.
