A key opportunity is coming up to supercharge climate action in Victoria.
The government elected in November will be tasked with setting Victoria’s 2035 Emissions Reduction Target in early 2023. This decision will be a precedent-setting one: Victoria will be the first jurisdiction in Australia and one of the first in the world to set a 2035 target.
Will you take the pledge to pressure our next state government to set a science-based 2035 Climate Target?
Community members have campaigned for years to get key pieces of climate policy legislated. These policies - like the Victorian Climate Change Act and the Victorian Renewable Energy Target - are now charting our pathway to net-zero emissions as a state.
We are already on track to significantly exceed our target of a 45-50% cut on 2005 emissions levels by 2030. Victoria’s latest greenhouse gas performance data, released in October 2022, showed that our state’s emissions fell by a massive 30% between 2005 and 2020.
Aiming for net zero emissions by 2035 is within our sights. It’s clear the Victorian government now has the momentum to aim well above ‘business as usual’ and align Victoria’s 2035 target with climate science.
We need community members all over Victoria to pledge to hold our next state government accountable when it comes to ensuring our 2035 Climate Target aligns with the climate science.
It will be one of the first decisions that the next state government has to make - so we’ll need to hit the ground running right away. Taking this pledge will mean you’ll be alerted about ways to get involved in coming months to put the pressure on.
Will you take the pledge and help us secure this key step forward for climate action in Victoria?
