Victorian Liberals: Match Labor's 2035 Climate Targets!

As the Victorian state election approaches, parties and candidates are announcing the Emissions Reduction Target they want to see set for 2035 in Victoria...

What 2035 Emissions Reduction Target will the Victorian Liberals commit to?

The Victorian Greens and several climate-focused independent candidates have committed to a target of net-zero emissions by 2035: a science-based target which aligns with the goal of keeping global warming below 1.5C.

The Andrews Labor government has announced that if returned to power in November at the Victorian State Election, it will set targets for Victoria of:

  • 95% renewable energy by 2035
  • 75-80% emissions reduction by 2035
  • Move the state target of net-zero emissions forward from 2050 to 2045

The question now for the Victorian Liberal Party is whether it commits to matching, or exceeding, these game-changing climate and energy commitments ahead of the election.

Will you call on Matthew Guy and the Victorian Liberals to match (or beat!) these 2035 targets?

The Victorian Liberals finally began to make up for their lag in climate policy ambition this year when party leader Matthew Guy and Shadow Minister for Climate Change James Newbury committed to uphold the state’s 2030 Emissions Reduction Target of 45-50%.

The Victorian Liberals’ affirmation that the net-zero by 2050 goal is no longer up for debate, and support of the current 2030 climate targets, are welcome steps, especially when put in contrast with their federal counterparts.

But when it comes to the Victorian Liberals’ track record on climate and energy policy in Victoria, recent history is still remembered by communities around the state. The last time the Liberals were in power in Victoria, they put in regressive anti wind energy laws, ruled out an orderly closure of the Hazelwood coal-fired power station, and as recently as 2018, pledged to scrap Victoria’s Emissions Reduction Targets and Renewable Energy Target.

Additionally, the Victorian Liberals’ current energy policy to open up new gas reserves is out of step with climate science and would see Victorians continue to be exposed to the health risks and cost-of-living pressures associated with fossil gas usage.

The Liberals have substantial work to do to build trust with communities on their climate commitments and scale up their ambition to align their policies with the goal of keeping global warming below 1.5C.

A commitment to match, or exceed, the Labor government's new climate targets from the Victorian Liberals would be welcomed by the families, small businesses and communities around the state who are already dealing with the costs of intensifying climate impacts.

Add your name to call on the Victorian Liberals to increase their climate policy ambition before the election.
