Infrastructure Australia has announced that it wants state governments to hand the operation of their public transport systems over to private operators, arguing that they could cut costs and improve service quality by doing so.

Friends of the Earth Australia (FoEA) strongly opposes any move to further privatise public transport systems:
“Infrastructure Australia was designed to be an independent statutory body so as to be able to provide the best possible recommendations to government” said FoEA campaigner Cam Walker. “But further privatisation sounds more like an extension of failed neo-liberal politics and less like sound public policy”.

They have done so by putting public transport under the control of
efficient, accountable public agencies, while Melbourne is a
privatised, unaccountable, uncoordinated mess.
But Melbourne's public transport can be taken back into public
control modelled on the very best in the world, if the state government
does not extend or renew the rail and tram franchises by the 30th
November 2007. If the government so chooses by the 2007 deadline,
Melbourne's trains and trams will revert to public ownership without
the need to compensate the private operators.

Public Transport Not Traffic
Friends of the Earth was a founding member of this campaign which was launched in 2013. It brings together communities across Melbourne that are opposed to the East-West toll road.
These communities are opposed to the East-West toll road because they know that another inner city toll road will add to our traffic crisis rather than improve our quality of life and economy by enabling efficient mobility.
