Across NSW, approvals for new dams were rushed through so fast that the Upper House has an ongoing inquiry into new dams.
Wyangala Dam on the Lachlan River is set to have its dam wall raised by 10m and the estimated costs of $650 million are likely to more than triple!
The Lachlan is a fragile valley, with relatively small flows and hugely significant wetlands and floodplains.
NSW state and federal public money will be used to expand Wyangala at the expense of downstream communities and 9 nationally significant wetlands including the Great Cumbung Swamp.
There are better alternatives like upgrading irrigation channels and investing in water recycling programs.
Urge Liberal Ministers below to knock back this dodgy dam wall.
- Federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley
- NSW Liberal Minister for Environment Matt Kean
- Minister for Planning Rob Stokes
- NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian
