Hermitage Creek forest walk - National Tree Day

Logging has been temporarily halted in the Hermitage Creek area of Toolangi state forest whilst the government asses biodiversity values and decide how they will protect a colony of threatened Greater Gliders. While it's safe for now this area could still be logged by VicForests as early as next week.

Join Friends of the Earth Melbourne on National Tree Day for a free tour of these precious forests and experience what we stand to lose if the state government allow logging to commence.

Meet at 11am on Sunday July 30th at Dom Dom saddle picnic ground on the Black Spur drive, Maroondah Highway.

From Dom Dom saddle we will convoy to Hermitage ck. We'll park cars and go for a walk guided by forest surveyors with expert knowledge of the area and its biodiversity values.

The walk will be on a formed track for approximately 1km until an area of forest is reached. The second part of the walk is optional and will further explore the forest by walking along another formed track that loops through the forest for about another 1km. For those people not wanting to go further than the initial 1km walk into the forest, you can wait on the track for the other group to come back or return to your cars via the same track we will come in on. We will walk back out the way we came, another 1km back down the track and return to our cars at approximately 4pm.

Prepare for about 3-4kms of walking on formed tracks through beautiful forests (approx 2 hours of easy-moderate walking with plenty of stops along the way to enjoy the bush).

The tracks we will walk on are vehicle tracks (not suitable for 2wd) and can be slippery sometimes so be sure you have appropriate strong footwear. A reasonable level of fitness is required.

What to bring:
- Picnic lunch (to eat where we park cars, you don't have to carry it)
- Warm clothing, the area is high altitude and will be cold
- Wet weather gear
- Strong footwear for walking in the forest
- Water bottle (1litre)
- Camera or phone
- Sense of adventure and desire to learn about the forests.
