Adaptation Alliance Call 4: Summer Impacts Response

Our 4th Climate Adaptation Activator call last week looked at how climate impacts over the summer were responded to. We also discussed media and comms around heatwaves and bushfires.

Here's all the info, ideas and solidarity shared on the call, as well as some upcoming events and resources...

Our next call will be on Thurs 3 April 6pm - hope to see you there! RSVP here.

See the presentation here.

On the call, we shared Climate Media Centre's (CMC's) advice on talking about various climate impacts and their suggested key messages for extreme weather events. See the presentation here.

We also heard from those on the call about how their local climate adaptation projects have progressed since we last met:

  • Climate Action Team Colac Otway Shire has had a massive win convincing its council to convert the swimming pool/gymnasium from gas to electric, and its Cooling Colac project is getting lots of interest and traction.
  • Whittlesea Climate Action Network is a new group that has launched and is interested in starting local climate adaptation projects - get in touch with them if you are in the area!
  • During the heatwave over summer, India and friends handed out cold water in reusable water bottles from op-shop, together with hydrolytes and frozen grapes to housing insecure people on the street in St Kilda.
  • Geelong Sustainability wasn't able to join us on the call, but after a successful award-winning pilot program, it has launched its Climate Safe Rooms program to Geelong and surrounding regions.

Act on Climate gave an overview of its Climate Adaptation Fair it had in February. Read about it here and let us know if you would like help putting on a similar event or would like to get in contact with any of the event speakers.

----------------------------------------------

"1. Talk about how impacts are local, immediate and relevant to people’s lives

2. Highlight widespread concern for climate change

3. Outline a positive vision for future" - CMC

----------------------------------------------

We brainstormed how the media framed climate impacts over Summer and how can we bring transformative climate adaptation into the conversation around climate impacts - i.e. not just individual survival tactics that don’t challenge root causes. Common threads from this discussion were:

  • media does not talk about community-wide preparedness as much as individual safety and only focus on what happens during an extreme weather event, but not the outcomes or adaptation measures communities can/need to take - with the possible exception of local media
  • media still sharing images of happy people at beach during a heatwave, undermining the seriousness of heatwaves
  • talk about and share more community level adaptation opportunities - kitchen table conversations a good way, tell the media there is a different, new angle to take by focusing on adaptation, help people research and find local initiatives, reach out to local media
