Adaptation Alliance Call 5: Engaging MPs & Media

On our 5th Climate Adaptation Activator call last week we explored ways to engage the media, elected officials, and our communities in order to progress climate adaptation initiatives. We also discussed important messaging when talking about climate adaptation and how we can build connection and conversation around climate adaptation in Victoria together through potential joint actions and an online presence.

Here's all the info, ideas and solidarity shared on the call, as well as some upcoming events and resources...

Our next call will be on Thurs 1 May 6pm - hope to see you there! RSVP here.

On the call, we unpacked how we had each personally or how our group had previously engaged with the media and MPs. And we explored building momentum and consensus on climate adaptation locally through engaging with local government, local media, local organisations, and others in our community - and what this could look like. See the presentation here.

We also heard updates from those on the call about how their local climate adaptation are progressing:

  • Climate Action Team Colac Otway Shire has been organising Climate Cafes and has an excellent upcoming event: Hotter, Drier Riskier: Bushfire in the Colac-Otway region
  • Whittlesea Climate Action Network is growing steadily and will be hosting a community resilience mapping event in May. It is planning to meet with local representatives soon.
  • East Gippsland Climate Action Network wasn't able to join the call, but emailed an update: it has started a group called Community Action for Readiness and Emergencies (CARE-Metung) to address the issues of preparedness within its immediate Metung community. The project is acting as a pilot for the bigger group associated with it, Climate Ready Communities (CRC) and can then be adapted for other communities in East Gippsland. CRC has developed an adaptation board game, which is engaging people well.

Act on Climate shared a preview of its new report: VIC Climate Resilience Inquiry Analysed: The leading concerns & adaptation solutions, which shares how Victorian communities can and want to adapt, as well as inspiring examples of what community-led climate adaptation looks like. It is a good resource to back up your climate adaptation wants and needs when talking to MPs.
