Adaptation Alliance Call 11 & 12: Housing & Local Strategies

On our 12th and final Climate Adaptation Activator call for the year, we heard from Indigo Regen about its journey fostering climate awareness and creating love for place. It was shared how it has incorporated adaptation through the resilience inquiry and its community cool seats.

Here's all the info, ideas and solidarity shared on the call, as well as some upcoming events and resources...

🥵 Heatwave Warning

heatwave warning has been issued for VIC, with Friday 19th December looking like the hottest day. The Victorian Department of Health has sent out a Heat Health Warning.

A severe heatwave warning has been called for Northern Country, North East, East Gippsland, West and South Gippsland and North Central. Locations likely to be impacted include Albury-Wodonga, Bendigo, Bright, Corryong, Echuca, Mansfield, Shepparton, Seymour, Wangaratta and Yarrawonga. More info here.

Please share this info with your communities and with friends and family most at risk. Our infographics on Tips to Keep Yourself and Your Community Cool and the need to check in on others can be found here to shared around.

On the call, we explored a community adaptation process and the common themes around climate imp[acts and adaptation solutions emerging. Next year we will navigate these processes together and build collective knowledge through sharing!

Housing has emerged as one of the common themes. See the presentation for case studies on this continent and the various ways to improve housing

Resources shared around housing include:

  • Beyond Housing in Wangaratta: architecturally and sustainable housing for homeless people

  • My Home Network: one strategy for connecting and coordinating across multiple local approaches to housing. It explores innovative solutions with local community members to meet the long-term housing needs and reduce housing stress, and advocates for:
    • greater housing support for vulnerable people in the community
    • increased and improved crisis, transition, social and affordable housing provision.
  • Grounded Community Land Trust Advocacy: a not-for-profit organisation established to advocate, incubate and accelerate the development of Community Land Trusts (CLTs) in Australia

  • The Australian Community Land Trust manual by Louise Crabtree Heyes

  • RAD Housing: is building on CLT model, built for those who cannot afford to buy in to CLT models, but that can pool in to decommodifying existing infrastructure, transition from individual ownership to collective stewardship and contribute to land back!

  • House You: a campaign initiated by folk who lost their homes to floods
  • NENA & Co-Housing Australia Housing Week webinars
