Sustainable Cities Updates

It's a troubling time with COVID-19 on the top of everyone's minds. We encourage everyone to support each other in any way they can and reach out for help if they need. We can get through this together.

Throughout this time, we're continuing to advocate for a more sustainable and equitable transport future. We're working to make sure our campaigns to Stop the North East Link and build Melbourne Metro 2 continue to grow despite this trying time.

For those who missed it, here’s an update on what we've been up to so far in 2020:

SNAP ACTION: Join our digital rally against fossil fuels in VIC

Join us for a digital snap rally

Our voices must not be silent in the face of the decision by Dan Andrews to scrap the onshore gas ban that puts our climate and our futures at risk.

The restrictions on public gatherings means we are deferring from the face-to-face actions and change the way protest happens to ensure we protect communities.

That’s why we are calling on you to participate RIGHT NOW in our ‘DIGITAL SNAP ACTION’, by ‘checking in’ en-masse at the Premiers Office on Facebook.

Check in @Treasury Place with a selfie telling Dan Andrews why you think he has made the wrong call on with gas. (This needs to be done on a smart device like a phone, tablet, etc.)

We may not be able to protest in person, but we can still make our presence known!

VIC farmlands are again at risk as Andrews opens up gas mining

Friends of the Earth expressed its shock at the announcement by the Andrews government that it will scrap the moratorium protecting Victorian farmland from risky onshore gas drilling.

Minister to Investigate Pumping Approval

The first river flows in 3 years are making their way down the Darling Barka, but its a bittersweet sight for communities excited to see the first flows but outraged to see them disappear into private dams.

The headwaters haven't even run the course of the river, but NSW Water Minister has allowed pumps to be turned on across the catchment.

Thats not right, its time to Flood The Minister!

Victorian offshore gas announcement expected soon

exploration_zones.png

In 2018, the Andrews Government released five new oil and gas exploration blocks off the Otway and West coast.

The tender process closed in mid February 2019. The government says that it has had 'strong' interest from companies that want to start exploring for gas.

We expect that an announcement on successful applicants will be made by autumn 2020.

It is essential that make it absolutely clear that the community does not support further fossil fuel development in the state.

A week of actions for Victorian climate leadership

Week_of_Action_March_2020.pngThere's only weeks left before the Andrews government makes its final decision on Victoria's first Emissions Reduction Targets.

With the Morrison government refusing to tackle the climate crisis, we need Victoria to show greater leadership.

When it comes to tackling the climate crisis, the global goal is to keep warming below 1.5°C. We need this to be Victoria's goal too. We need science-based Emissions Reduction Targets.

We're calling on all our supporters, community climate champions, allies in the movement and elsewhere to join us in a Week of Action for Victorian Climate Leadership. March 14 - 24.

Friends of the Earth response to the Liberal Nationals ‘Unlocking Victoria’s natural gas potential’ policy

Yesterday the Victorian Liberal Nationals opposition announced a new plan to ‘Unlock Victoria’s Natural Gas Potential’ in a policy which would scrap the current moratorium on onshore conventional gas drilling in the state.

Despite pledging support for the Andrew’s Government’s ban on unconventional gas drilling (fracking), and a right of veto for farmers, the new policy contradicts the party’s previous support for the moratorium when it was enacted in 2014.

The Coalition enacted the moratorium while they were in power in large part because of the strong opposition from farmers in regional Victoria to any form of gas drilling operations on agricultural land.

Mutual Aid - Get Involved!

melbourne_photos.png

Following catastrophic fires in East Gippsland, an incredible network of mutual aid and support is developing to provide relief to impacted communities. A network of local landholders is also emerging to provide food, water and shelter to hungry and homeless wildlife.

Due to the overwhelming support flowing into this network from people who want to feed and help wildlife, Friends of the Earth is teaming up with local networks to strengthen the Food for Wildlife network.
