After a community campaign that lasted two-and-a-half years, the Andrews government has committed to Victorian Renewable Energy Targets of 25 percent by 2020 and 40 percent by 2025.
Friends of the Earth welcome the Andrews government's announcement of ambitious and achievable VRETs. All parties can support renewable energy and we would welcome the Matthew Guy opposition demonstrating leadership by supporting the scheme.
The Renewable Energy Targets will secure billions worth of investment in Victoria and create thousands of jobs. They will deliver drought-proof income for regional communities and cut pollution. And, most importantly, they will help our state tackle climate change.
To ensure the VRET stands the test of time, we need to send a strong signal to opposition leader Matthew Guy that Victorians want more renewables, and want bipartisan support for the VRET.
Matthew Guy has disappointed the community by recently voting against legislation to secure a fairer price for rooftop solar. Voting against solar is a slap in the face for Victoria's solar homes and all those who want to be part of the renewable energy revolution.
The VRET has emerged as a key litmus test for the opposition on renewables. By backing the VRET, the Matthew Guy opposition can support renewable energy, jobs and investment in Victoria.
Friends of the Earth believe there are matters of public policy that can gain bipartisan support from the major parties—such as investment in healthcare and education. Join our call on the state opposition to support the Victorian Renewable Energy Targets.
