COMMUNITY FORUM: Why is the West still waiting for Better Buses in 2024?

Melbourne's Western suburbs have some of the fastest growing populations in the country.

The City of Wyndham has a population bigger than all of Geelong, or all of Wollongong. Yet this community has some of the worst Public Transport access in our City. Newer developments such as Mount Atkinson (Melton) and Mambourin Estate (Werribee) have no public transport at all

In recent years the community voice in the West demanding Better Buses has become louder and louder, with community actions and forums and local council calling on the Victorian Labor Government to act on their bus plan.

But nearly 1000 days since Victoria's Bus Plan was released - we're still waiting at the bus stop!

Join our community forum to ask the questions - why is the bus plan stalling? What needs to happen to get buses on our roads? What kind of bus system will get us to school, uni, work or the shops?

Here are our speakers:

Community speakers will include:

Nasreen Mohamed - Mambourin Estate Resident, Physiotherapist and regular bus user

Senthill Sundaram - Member of the Point Cook Action Group, Wynbus Director and community advocate

Graeme Blore - Cairnlea Resident & community advocate, former Youth Worker & mental health counsellor, and independent candidate for Brimbank City Council

Julie White - Inner West resident, Lawyer, Parent and disability advocate

  • Ms Samantha Ratnam - Leader of the Victorian Greens
  • Mr Trung Luu MP - Member for Western Metro (Liberal Party)
  • Mr Steve McGhie - Member for Melton (ALP representative)
  • Mr David Ettershank MP - Member for Western Metro (Legalise Cannabis Party)

Local Government speakers include:

LeadWest is an advocacy alliance comprising the five western metropolitan municipalities of Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton and Wyndham and is home to 840,000 people representing more than 17% of Melbourne’s population.
A particular focus area for LeadWest in 2024 is the urgent need to review the western suburbs bus network which is so critical to improving accessibility for a wide range of services, employment, education and social interactions.

LeadWest Deputy Chair Cr Peter Maynard (Wyndham City Councillor) - Cr Peter Maynard was first elected to Wyndham City Council in 2012 and has served three terms as Mayor. He is also Wyndham City’s representative on the National Growth Areas Alliance Strategic Committee and the Victorian State Government’s Community Advisory Committee (Justice Precinct). Cr Maynard also holds Wyndham City’s Active City portfolio, which includes a focus on access to active transport infrastructure
