Key moments: Friends of the Earth & 3CR

1976 3CR goes to air.  The Melbourne based community radio station provides a voice for those denied access to mass media, particularly the working class, women, Indigenous people and the many community groups and community issues discriminated against through mass media.

Late 1970s – early 1980s 3CR-FOE environment programs air weekly hosted by The Alternative Technology Association, and the Habitat and Heritage show presents daily updates.  3CR-FOE collaborate on fundraisers for both organisations, and produce nuclear energy program segments.

1994 - 1996 FOE Melbourne starts Green Beat radio show on 3CR, producing 97 shows covering local protests with a focus on environmental and social issue campaigns.

Late 1990s - 2000s 3CR audio documentation of FOE Indigenous solidarity gatherings and many other environment-focused events.

FOE segments and guests on the 3CR Breakfast Show.

3CR-FOE radio shows cover S11 protests with FOE guest Cam Walker noting the different blocks at the protest surrounding Crown Casino, from Green blocks to trade union blocks, expressing solidarity and building communities.

Local DJs and artists support the annual FOE Melbourne Ball with community radio allies, activists and local creatives producing wonderful, self-made fundraising events, attracting new supporters and promoting local performers such as the Wolfgramm Sisters.

FOE’s Green Beat show transforms into the Earth Matters show, still on air with 3CR in 2020.
